Miss Focus - Your unique reality, the perception of reality and who we are

On a previous post, I was talking about the importance of having an effective internal conversation, a dialogue that can help us achieve not only a state of mind that we want, but also the goals we set for ourselves.

There are several ways to do this.

However, before we can initiate a proper conversation, there is something very important we have to consider. Who are we really?

Try to imagine your response to this situation:

Some friends and I are all sitting in a café with our children, and suddenly one of the little angels falls over and knocks a drink over on the table (usually it’s one of my boys!). Are all of us in that room experiencing the same reality at that moment? The child? The mother? The friends? The other children? The other people in the café? The waiters?

The answer to this question is NO. If you were to turn and ask all the people present to describe what happened there, each would have a different answer influenced by their own perception at that moment: from “the poor thing was just playing and tripped” or “children will be children” to “that child was out of control!” and “what a little spoilt brat!”.

The occurrence of an event changes reality and how we perceive it is always influenced by other factors. These make it quite difficult for us to know for sure what truly happened, and so our reality will always be subjective and unique to us.

The Perception of Reality and its importance to our lives

Our personal reality is more than just the way we interpret a situation, it is a part of WHO WE ARE. It is the way we perceive every moment in time – ourselves, the place, the other, this world and everything in it within this particular moment.

This perception of reality includes not only our internal world, but the physical world around us too. Those interactions we are aware of and those our conscious mind is oblivious to, yet they are constantly happening within our bodies or externally in reaction to other things.

As you have probably guessed by now, this perception is detrimental to our lives, as it determines what will be our emotional state and how we will interpret the situation, react to it and act.

So in order to create a change in our lives, we must first know what the factors that influence our personal perception are, raise them to a conscious level and develop skills that will enable us to change their influence over us.

In the next few posts I will be discussing the components of our perception and how we make it even more d̶i̶f̶f̶i̶c̶u̶l̶t̶ fun for ourselves by messing with our own reality - without even realising we are doing it.

I'd love to read any thoughts you have on what I have written so far, please comment below or send me a message :)
